Lost Memoirs 06:12
don’t rush for the finish line it’s just a wire that will cut you in two one door closes another burns if you want freedom grow some wings I stood on the corner of the street blood red skies were hanging over me jaws were full of burning cotton fields stay in control all your life until you have no shadow left at all wait on the corner of your world look for a sign like a three legged dog with its head out the window of a car ragged tunes ascend from demon town the empty bar stool does not lie foxes dance on the brow of distant hills while a chain gang of sparrows guard your windowsill daughter of the vanished lands my disinherited son

There’s a seagull staring in my window The sun is wearing x ray glasses I am not a criminal or a prophet I am just learning how to steer my body Between the bodies inside my body And there is a ghost who lives under the stairs I call her hedgwidge and that is now her name Sometimes we sit and watch documentaries about obscure subjects But then again I’ll have to go and do the shopping Two bags of rice is all that you need to be an artist To be an artist oh what a silly path to follow You could be an accountant or a killer or a zombie What a zombie you are to me I saw a chaffinch singing by the stream It was not a broken wheel It was a space invader A song is a stained glass window catching the sun on its wing Little captain of the mossy branches Cloud shadows fall on your meadow like tarot cards being turned over Near the rushes there is a silver lake bending like lovers Pressed between the pages of a book that’s fallen behind the sunset Your bramble throated trilled song is a blessing A strand of silk in the dawn

I met a ragged man and a raven woman On the shores of Lindisfarne He had red and green with a feather She had a purple gown with a silver band The sun was setting low And the tide was a turning wheel They passed without a word And they vanished like a song That ragged man and the raven woman The land and sea they were And the harvest was stacked high A ship sailed through the mist And the moon said all is one

The builders of joy are the children of sorrow The builders of joy are the children of sorrow Far down the valley they are ringing the bell And up on the hill a blackbird is singing

Walt’s Ghost Last night I saw Walt Whitman’s ghost with his head in a sling Tending to runaway soldiers with bullet hole eyes I asked him how do you know which side these horses were on? He pointed up to the north star and was gone I woke and I found myself standing on London Bridge A ragged moon rose like a cracked bottle thrown in the Thames I jumped in a taxi and said take me to William Blake And the driver said you must be crazy in traffic like this So I threw all my notebooks of gold on the purple fire And cast all my poems and paintings on the emerald sea Until Walt Whitman’s ghost re-appeared at my bedroom door He said I can see son you’re starting to get the hang of this job Lovers will visit at dawn with pearls in their eyes Voices will haunt you at night from the telegraph wires Wolves will be guarding the path that lead to the well Starlings will diamond the sky with their beaks in a sling

Welcome the maggot headed emperor sun We have vowed to uphold your beauty Welcome the maggot headed emperor sun Festering in our dream time fields The wind is a rusty pair of scissors Hacking at the poems I’ll never finish The night rattles like a tea cup There a hole in my jacket There’s a knife in my heart I asked you to put it there And you did you did The pyramids are very impressive But so is the removal van When it’s all over and you are facing The maggot headed emperor sun The trees are twisted coat hangers Pretending to be longships They set themselves on fire in order to get noticed The swans look very much like swans When they swim in the lake that looks like a lake Time is the ship on our shoulders Gondoliers of sorrow are bringing the harp of desire to your door O maggot headed emperor sun We have vowed to uphold your beauty I vow a solemn vow from now to the end Let the only employment be Joy Joy Joy Joy

Stretched out in the sky Time unfolding like the first star In search of the elementals we go Stretched out in the sky Riders Fearlessly into the void Riders Time unfolding like the first star Faster than the sky In search of the elementals we go A glimpse of chariot wheels Riders Time unfolding like the first star The wind rises And falls Rises And falls Rises And falls And calls Riders High above the trees In search of the elemental we go Fearless into the void A glimpse of chariot wheels Riders Time unfolding like the first star Stretched out in the sky High above the trees High above the mountains There are no Temples Temples Time unfolding like the first star Stretched out in the sky In search of the elementals In search of the elementals Time is unfolding like the first star Faster than the sky High above the trees High above the mountains There are no temples Temples The wind rises and falls In search of the elementals Riders Riders A glimpse of chariot wheels High above the estuary High above the trees High above the mountains There are no temples The wind rises and falls Rises and falls Rises falls Rises falls …….. about

Naked in the dreaming, songs emerge, visit us, go their way.

I’ll attempt no chronological explanation for this weaving together of songs that all come from a fertile range of previous Burnt Paw projects, places, encounters and explorations. Songs worth keeping are those that live on in a world of images overflowing the time of their own making. They survive, and in fact grow more alive with enigmatic magnetic energy.

It’s fair to say that the soil where many of these tracks emerged from is scattered across a map that really only exists in this collection of sounds. Birmingham, Nottingham, Derby, Memphis Tennessee, Durham North Carolina, Glasgow and now Edinburgh. All played a part and gave me energy, inspiration. I’ve many to thank and love in all those places. People who’s kindness and encouragement has given me a key to unlock doors and the strength to continue.

In the middle of pulling together these hidden visions, I found a new realisation. No matter how it looks, you’re never lost if you’ve given your energy to something worthwhile. Friends stay in the heart, even if they’re not in your life. Individual Dreams begin and end. Many lie shattered. But the dreaming itself, never ever ever ends.

Thank you for listening and supporting and being who you are, whoever you are. I say this in the notes to every album I’ve ever made, and I’ll say it again here. Don’t give up your quest. You’ve not even started. The wounds heal and the starry wheel is just about rise over the hill.

Get yourself an extra biscuit.

You know what to do.
